i asked once if someone adds a file to b4x.com if this file is scanned for viruses and erel answered no.
then @Informatix said that he is using a soft that separate all files he downloads to different sectors in his hd and like this his private files cannot be infected.

the reason i am asking is my notebook stop working 3 days ago and i have to try to recover as much files as i can and try to format my hd or switch to ssd.

now i would like to use that soft but don't know the name and can't find the thread.

does anyone know how that soft is called? or does anyone has some suggestions for me how i could protect my hd so it won't happen again? (what virus soft are you using? what would you recommend me to use?)

I use Avast as AV which is free and stable
I use dropbox for my sources which means everything gets copied around to several machines and even if you trash something you can recover it via the dropbox site as it keeps track of versions.
Sandboxie is a must when you want to use a serial key generator as they tend to contain stuff that shouldn't be there and it wouldn't harm disabling your antivirus to make the exe working.

when you buy an SSD drive from Crucial you get a free license for Acronis aswell, with that you can take a snapshot of your machine while it's still running so you have a 1/1 copy of your machine which can be used for recovery when your system doesn't boot anymore or a hard drive died.

thanks sorex, i will also try Acronis.
i will make an image of my hd when i will install everything important to it like all java updates, b4x, office,.. and like this when again i have problems with my pc i will just restore that image instead of installing everything again.

another option which I use for almost a decade is work in a VMWare desktop virtual machine.

if you get a new machine you just have to copy 1 folder to the new machine and you can start working again in a few minutes.
And when you want to try out new software you can take a snapshot, if the software sucks and doesn't uninstall right you just revert to the previous snapshot/state.

taking a backup is fast as hell since it's all in a virtual disk that is 1 file.

I'm using Backblaze to back up all files in my computer. I once deleted my project by mistake, tried undelete and file recover but could not took it back. Finally I access Backblaze to extract it from backup. It helped me alot.
