Can't get emulated device to work

Having a difficult time getting the emulator to display. It brings up the lock screen but nothing else. I am connected according to Designer. I keep thinking there is some startup sequence I'm missing.

Using version 2.71

API 16

Trying to test on AVD_for_10_1in_WXGA_Tablet emulator

Using Windows 8 PC

(The Emulator used in the Beginner tutorial works with the tutorial program)

I made several attempts yesterday and it finally started up correctly and I did some testing. Today I can't get past the "lock" screen.

When I start the emulator and connect the "Lock" screen appears but when I run my program nothing else happens.

Through trial and error I just found that if I press the Page Up key on my PC keyboard the proper screen came up. Is this really the way it's supposed to work?

And, forgive me my ignorance. I'm a newbie evaluating the trial version.

Try using the mouse to slide the lock all the way to the side
