Custom Keyboard working with external usb device

I have a barcode scanner plugged into my tablet using a usbtg cable to make the tablet act as a receiver of data. The scanner acts basically like a keyboard. Most of my app is scanning data, but there will have to be some edittext entry.

My problem is that because there is a keyboard plugged in, I believe it thinks there is an external keyboard and therefore won't put up a keyboard for me to type with. The default keyboards would be fine for now, although I would like to make custom keyboards in the future.

So how to do I force the keyboard to come up.

Have you tried to show the keyboard with the IME library?

I just made my own simple keyboard and I make it visible on the main layout when it is needed.
