etiquette/appropriateness of making app full screen

I am considering whether to make an app full screen. As a developer, I like the full screen because it gives more space and focuses the user's attention on the app. However, because this is my first app, I don't know how users might react to this. Do users prefer to have the notification bar visible? For those of you that have created full screen apps, what have been the reactions from your users?

My opinion about that, if you need the space, use it.

It really depends on the type of app. As an end user I prefer most of my apps to not use full screen

The notification bar is important for users. Most applications should keep it.
