Formatting external Hard Disk (USB)

I'm searching above all... consolation

It seems that the formatting of a an external HD 500Gb uses at least 4 hours, maybe more!

Do you think it is normal or the HD is damaged?

No, not fast.

I have not done a check, after formatting, but I will, thanks.

If the full format suceeded i wouldn't worry to much.
A full format runs an additional check (compared to fast format) checking the hard drive for any bad sectors.
