Keyboard defaults

Is it possible to default the keyboard on edittext entry to numeric - but not restrict to numbers only.

in my situation it is useful for users to see numbers - but have the option to enter text if required

I need the same thing, but I do not see how the IME lib will help. I simply want the DEFAULT View to be the numeric pad rather than text.
