Thanks Erel. Both apps are apparently using the old style (the title bar is narrower and there is no icon). The second app has the menu icon in the status bar at the bottom, but not in the title bar. The first app, the one the original post was about, does not have an icon in either positon. This is the app that "floats" on a transparent background. In the manifest editor I commented out the "translucent" line so now the title bar is displayed as well. What is interesting is that on my Evo, which has a hardware menu button, I can get to the menu, but on my Galaxy Note 10.1 the eicon doesn't show and I can't get to the menu -- it is with the Note that I was surprised that there is no menu button. Both of these apps were originally developed in B4a 2.22 and compile with Android 2.2, API 8. After starting the thread, I recompiled both of them with Android 4.2, API 16 (or is it 17?), but with no change including the size of the title bar. However, an app I just started and for which I compiled an initial test for the basic layout using Android 4.2, API 16 does have the new title bar. I haven't yet compared the manifests to see if there are any differences and the newest app has yet to have a menu.
I am less concerned about the menu in the first app than trying to understand why the icon isn't appearing at all. For thiss app, the menu consists of only one item, which I can actually do witout a menu, if needed.
However, I'd still like to know why the menu icon doesn't show so I'll know what to do in a more crucial situation. So, how do I ensure that I'm using the new style and will that work on, for example, Froyo and Gingerbread?
Thanks. again.
