Monitoring/logging of network connectivity

In one of my apps I utilise a data conneciton whilst on a race circuit.

It would be useful to build up over time, a coverage map for each circuit, so in advance i would know what sort of data connectivity is available and whethers its gprs/edge/3g etc

Is there a way of establishing in b4a the connection type available and also ideally anything about the bandwidth on offer ?
