Never ending service

I am writing an app that uses the SMS service, therefore, even when the phone is sleeping, I want the service to keep running.
How would I do that?

Set the service as a foreground service.
Look at the services tutorial on how to do that.
EDIT: Oops, sorry, also you have to set the device wake lock as well.
