Am still seeking if there is a better way to set a views Z-order in designer so that the view goes in front of certain views but behind other ones - I have a few activities with several overlapping views and it tends to be rather tedioius using only "bring to front" or "send to back" to put them in their correct "layer", so to speak.

To my knowledge, there is no way to do this in Android/Dalvik.

Note that you can break your layout into several layout files. It might be easier to maintain.
