Wake up phone

I have a program that uses the GPS coordinates and warns the user when he leaves a specific area (block on a grid). All works fine until the phone goes to sleep.
Is there a way to keep monitoring the position with the GPS when the phone goes to sleep, wake up the phone when the user goes out of area, and give an audible warning?

This will work, by keeping the phone awake all the time, but is not exactly what I am looking for. Folks don't like to keep the phone alive all the time due to battery drain.
Any other options?

You can use StartServiceAt to schedule a service to start, even if the phone sleeps.
The GPS is disabled when the phone sleeps (unless you acquire a partial lock).
