2 newbie problems

I was looking at this video and tried to do what he does:

Problem #1:
My design-mode looks really ugly like this:

(sorry, cant post URLs)

I changed the "text" and also the text-style. Nothing happened. It still says button1. Why?

Problem #2:
I did press the "play" icon and it did compile without errors.
But no emulator showed up.
How do I fix this?

Ok, I did manage to get the emulator working and ran the app. Now the button had the text and the background had the effect I did set.

But why didn't I see this in the designer mode?
