Android Question DateTime.DateFormat MMM returns Jul. IE with a full stop

Asking for a date formatted as dd/MMM/yyyy or dd-MMM-yyyy returns the abbreviated month Jul or Aug but with a full stop as well as in Jul. or Aug.
As far as I am aware it shouldn't be appending a . to the end of the month letters.

Looks like a bug to me?

Is your locale set to French ? if so the short month format end with '.'

this comes from a google search .. I have seen nothing / find nothing in the forum.
