PNG's are GIF's bad news?

I read somewhere that Androids can use PNG' images, or JPG, but don't like GIF format. Is this true? I can make sharper graphcs smaller with GIF. Do GIF format pictures display on all android devices?

GIF is supported by Android, what is NOT supported is Animated GIFs.

Great! If you're absolutely sure. I don't want to write an entire program only to discover that because it works on my Chinese Android tablet, some people with other Androids couldn't see it.
