Unless he knows the BIOS/UEFI password else can't change the boot sequence. Furthermore, very likely he doesn't know about Linux.

I had an electronics engineer neighbor who installed a system in his vehicle that gave electric shocks when touching the door release handle.

Sorry to hear that @aeric. Sadly there is no such thing as 100% security.... you can only make theft more difficult to carry out. Parking in a well-lit location, not leaving stuff on show will not deter stupid kids who are trying to impress each other by acting as the hardest guy in the gang.

I had a colleague who had a work laptop stolen from a coffee shop when he was not looking. He had GPS tracking that pinpointed the device down to 3 or 4 apartments in a rough area. He went to the police but they would not act as the information was not specific enough to get a search warrant. I guess the Police can't go kicking down the doors of innocent folks on a whim..... although that depends what country you live in!

His employers were quite content to remotely wipe the device, shame they could not make it blow up!

I like the flame thrower but..... A nervous driver may well toast the first poor soul that comes to the window at the traffic lights wanting to sell you some peanuts or a packet of tissues. That would be very unfortunate.

I live in Brazil, depending on the city, it is not possible to walk around with a cell phone on display without it being stolen, in fact I don't know if I know anyone in my family who hasn't been robbed yet... it's sad... which makes me think about asking, how Is the security in your country?

Actually security in my place is quite good. That's why we always take it for granted and seldom take precaution. However, foreign workers and visitors are growing up in numbers and economic has become bad recently.

Most notebook brands have Absolute company software installed in the BIOS that can find the device at the time a new Windows OS is installed, my Lenovo has it activated (you must pay annually), if an Argentinian can pay for it , it's because it's cheap. I have removed the BIOS pasword, so in case of being stolen, I let the thief to install a new windows, replace the hard disk or thatever he wants, sooner or later they are gonna install a Windows on it, he he. Absolute persistent protection will infect the new copy!

I remember when New York City had a terrible car theft problem in the 70s/80s. People would put signis in their car windows that said "No Stereo in Car" to deter thieves.

One guy cam back to find all the windows in his car smashed and on his "No Stereo in Car" sign someone had scrawled "GET ONE!!"
