I am forever screaming out at the designer of those things.

At night , I generally work ,live and relax in low light situations ... only to find I have to turn on the main lights / grab a torch just to plug in a bloody USB gadget .

Type-C is actually the next gen USB system. It's already being used by Apple.
Dunno when it will be broadly available.
