This is true. I have a friend who developed an iOS app that takes a selfie photo and allows you to change the color of your hair – I assume to something crazy like purple or green.
He says he has made $100-$200 each month for the past three years from this app.

the store is full of these unbelievable apps that do well for some unexplainable reason.

And then... 5-10 million un-installs.
Maybr but the real question is why.
What made 5 milion people download this app.
Is it the pixel t-rex icon? Is it the name? Is it the simplicity of the game? Is it the store presentation? Is it because people are fimiliar with this t-rex from google webpage when u have no internet connection?
So i want to understand what was the factor and if u understand it u can make a very good game and use your knowledge to get lots of installs without uninstalls.
Edit: i dont care about how much money he did i want to understand what was the main factor for his high install rate.
Its just how it is. Same with most media, look at the music charts, how many top artists there spend years writing songs, most of them have their songs written for them.
I am planning to follow this trend by copying old games in order to get enough money to work full time on games, then I will be more creative and write original larger games.

That is a good question.
I think it's just a sign that you need to make "Pixel Knight Run!!!!" Pixel knight but as an infinite runner jump over spiked balls and bats, shoot swords at oncoming birds, jump over pits of spikes, it would be great, and you already have everything in place to make it!

You spend months developing a good game and you see no results. And there are games made in one day (like this one, or flappy bird and clones) with million downloads!

Maybe there is a "luck" factor there.
If you are ready to spend some thousand $ in promotion I guess your game may become popular (that's valid for big companies, not for "indie" developers)
Many developers use cross promotion. If you have allready a popular game, you anounce there your new games.
Well, if you count aside the hundreds of false ratings, you are left with almost nothing...
To start earning money, you need to be ready to spend money... Buy a few app ratings/downloads from those shaky companies that have one guy in from of 20 phones...
