With Android 4.4 returning "True" will not delete the message.

Google changed the whole way to handle SMS in 4.4
You cannot delete messages unless you are the 'default' app to handle SMS.

Did you try another option like Broadcast Receiver library? Please test if it is workable. I don't have Android 4.4 to test.
