Android Question Beginner's Guide

When I connect Designer to my device and the abstract designer using source code from beginner's guide for User Interfaces (Section 13) I don't see anything in the Abstract designer except standard message (to connect to emulator or device .... etc.) and my device only displays the word "Activity". Why don't I see any Views?
