Best Desktop for B4x Time

Hi!

I am considering upgrading my desktop because I spend so much time in the B4x IDE's. Please no one take me wrong, I am not complaining in any way about the speed of anything other than my Neanderthal computer.

I am hardware-challenged. I know. I need help. Not sure where to put my low budget dollars? RAM? CPU? Disk access? All of it?

Want compiles and the IDE check-a-roo-everything while I am typing to be really fast.

Thanks in advance!

I just purchased a second hand laptop. A 2018 Lenovo Thinkpad T480s. This is the best laptop I can get from Lazada (an online Shopping platform) with an affordable price MYR 2630 (USD 628.47)
The specs:
Intel Core i7-8650U (8th Gen) 1.90GHz with vPro (Quad core)
24GB DDR4 RAM
256GB PCIe SSD Storage
14" IPS Touchscreen (1920x1080)
Intel UHD Graphics 620
Windows 10 Pro

Why I need quad core CPU and high RAM? Because I want to run virtual machines such as Virtual Box.
The specs above also meet the requirements for Windows 11 without issue. However, I will wait for some while before upgrade to Windows 11.

Thank you so much @aeric !

I don't even need the laptop or touch stuff. Justs lots of everything you discussed plus USB ports galore. Small footprint a bonus.

The price you got is encouraging!

Ya, I am a bit out of topic as your title mentioned about a Desktop.
I work at home and most of the time I don't travel but what if I need to meet my clients and show them my work? Then I would need something to hook up on their projector. My last meeting, I brought my MacBook Pro just to show my demo web apps developed with ASP.NET which I hosted them on a shared hosting. If I need to demo my B4J windows app then I must have a Windows machine. Mac is really not suitable to run Windows even in a VM or other way.

You don't have to - upgraded my Dell G3 - was reluctant in the beginning - but everything works perfectly - just make sure all your drivers are up to date before upgrading.

The entire process took about 3 hours including the download and I took about 15 minutes to get used to the new interface.

I suggest RAM and SSD (HDD), from my recent experience.
After my i5 with SATA crashed, I got i3 SSD with same 4 GB ram, and feel way way faster now.
So maybe SSD is boon here. And yes more RAM is always better.

Is there any software to benchmark my b4a compiles. Maybe we should have a same app to complile to check compilation time.

Varies from slow to fast if you compile in debug mode repeatedly, as it uses prior dex code.
Compiling in release mode will be nearly same most time.

I've got 16gb RAM on my desktop, I'm thinking of upgrading to 32GB but will it improve anything?
Depends on what you will use it for.
A 64 bit os will surely use 32gb ram better for heavy duty app like video processing.
