2 days ago i made a reservation on booking.com for a penthouse in eilat. as stated in the site the payment will be when i arrive and the owner of the penthouse may hold a part of the amount to make sure that i will not cancel in the last minute or so.

yesterday i got a SMS that there was a problem with my credit card. i call the credit card company and they told me that there is no problem with my card and that the owner of the penthouse made a try to charge the card that also was successful but he told booking.com that there is a problem.

so i called booking.com and after a long talk i asked them how has my credit card been charged? have you done it or the owner and to my surprise they told me that they gave all my credit card information to the owner and he is the one that does the charge. i could not believe that they give my credit card info including full name, credit card number, date + CCV without me agreeing with it. i told them that there was nowhere stated that my card details will be given to the person i rent from. so they told me that it says that he can charge your card and "HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN IF HE HAS NOT MY DETAILS" so i told them there are 1000 ways to solve such a problem you could send him a link where he just clicks on it and adds the amount with seeing any details of my card and so on. they told me that he has limited access to this info so about few times he can click to see my details. what a stupid argument i said to them. i guess they have not heard about the PRINT SCREEN button on the keyboard or a pencil and paper.

i told them that i have not interpreted anything by myself like how he is going to charge me without getting my details it is your responsibility to tell me that by clicking on the ORDER button that i agree that my credit card details will be given to the owner of the penthouse.

then the customer guy told me haaaaaa i found here it is written that he gets my details, so i asked him where and this is what i showed me:

i told him, do you understand what is written here? it just tells me as a customer what kind of payment the owner accepts and not that i agree to give him my credit card details!!

how unprofessional can such a big website be where they have lots of reservations every day.

after some searching i found that i am not the only one that is surprised:


how can it be that they have no secure way to ensure the payment for reservation like giving a demo card to the owner where they have my card details secure and encrypted .
the customer guy also told me that you don't need to worry that he will do something with your details its like you are going shopping and buy with your card it is the same thing. and i answered it is not when i shop no one takes all my card details like CCV and also everything is done in front of me and i am also not saying that the owner will do something with my card but how is he going to store my details on his pc? in an excel file? on booking.com I guess everything is encrypted and secure but how would a private person store such sensitive data on his private pc at home??

really a bad way start my vacation :confused:

the difference is that erel agreed to give his card details even if he thought that it is not a good thing to do but in my situation i never agreed to give my details away!

When you want to startup?

you enter your card information to a secure site and receive a key. every time you want to pay on the internet or even in a store you provide this key -> the business put this key as the card information and you receive a notification on your phone that you agree to perform this action like google or apple is doing now when you log in to your account. i would consider this as a secure way to pay.

Seems a odd way to do business, how do booking.com get their commission? That's probably why the renter told them there was a problem so he doesn't have to pay them.

Sometimes we are “lucky” to encounter customer service that doesn’t know how to handle the case.

p/s in this case, tell him that you want to speak to his supervisor.

i am less concerned about the vacation than about the fact my credit card details are inside an excel file or email in some private computer. :(

Everything in the internet is protected with a password. The password itself is protected using a hash.
Compare this to the absurd fact that you give your credit card to every site or seller and rely on their good intentions.
You can see in the other thread I made, that there are more advanced and secure solutions in most countries.

That's incredibly stupid and possibly illegal if the owner does not adhere to credit card/privacy security practices. In my business in the U.S., you have to jump through hoops to keep the credit card details of your customers. It's such a hassle, I use Stripe and/or Quicken for all my billing. Yes, you have to pay a small percentage, but it's worth getting my time and sanity back.

Unfortunately, you will probably need to cancel your card and get a new one issued.

And never use booking.com again. (Thanks for the heads-up!)

Agree. It’s unethical. First we thought we got some discount but actually they sell our information to others to get other type of profit.

I stopped using booking.com after many many years being a loyal customer, due to a really bad experience with them when I booked a small apartment in Edinburgh a couple of years ago for a short vacation break. The nightmare started when I received a notification that my reservation had been cancelled... just when I had arrived to the door of the apartment. They simply left me alone, had to look for a new one, and even if I got partially refunded for the price difference, didn't get all my spent money back
I lost money and time (during and after my short vacation) due to something that was totally their fault. Talked with several support people. Even tried to state it in the page reviews, but of course they filtered it saying that the reviews had to be only about the booked site, not the booking service. Finally abandoned.

Never again. For me, Booking.com sucks :mad:

you are so right, so the story has a sequel. the guy told booking.com that there was a problem with my card and after 24 the reservation was canceled. of course that there was no problem with my card and I also called my credit card company to ensure that. anyway, after 24 hours the reservation was cancel, and guess what 5 minutes later I receive pictures and 4 messages from him telling me that he doesn't know what happened and why "booking.com" canceled the reservation and that he has other apartments to offer me (that are more expensive). so this is the new way to get people to make a reservation. you put a fake apartment. people make the reservation. you cancel the reservation and offer them something else. so not only that booking.com is sending private information without permission they even don't make sure the people that offer on their site are reliable. what a disappointment. ?

at least I did not tell anything to my kids so the disappointment is only for me. i will see if I can get another apartment (not from booking.com) because hotels now in Eilat are too expensive!

Seems Airbnb have a lot of options, if that's acceptable to you.

Only if you want to pay for something.

Don't assume everybody uses the amazingly bad system booking.com uses. (I've never even heard anyone else than booking.com doing that.)

Airbnb looks much more professional. i also found really nice places there and even cheaper. thank you I search a little bit there :)

One more thing to note: booking.com was founded 1996. Imagine the massive amount of legacy systems from hell they have on their back-end... :-( Probably part of the reasoning why they thought it was an awesome idea to share your credit card information with the world - I imagine it just wasn't very strange to do it like that in the last millennium.

(For reference: Airbnb was founded 2008, and received funding from Y Combinator, probably the most successful startup incubator in the world.)
