How can I clean out the data that is held in a buffer when using the "Serial" library?

When I connect my PDA to a Total Staton or Digital Level, I send commands to the instruments to read a prism or bar coded staff. The instrument then sends the readings back to the PDA where it gets processed.

What happens sometimes is that data appears on the screen even before the instrument has started reading. It is data that comes through which is exactly the same than the previous reading (I have turned the telescope of the Total Station, which means that at least the horizontal angle should be different)

In opl (Psion) we have a "Flush" command that clears out anything that might sit in the buffer (memory?) of the serial port.

If it is a request then send protocol where is the data coming from if you haven't yet requested it? Anyway SerialEx has a Flush method that clears both input and ouput buffers of the serial port.
