this code works correctly.

I tried your example but it does not revert back to the default colors.
It just shows the black color instead of default (may be cyan) color.
Attached screenshots will show:
- the colors of the checkbox in your example (the 1st one),
- and also the
default colors of the checkbox I added (
the 2nd one),
for both unchecked and checked states.
You can see that the colors are different.
That means it does not revert back to the default colors.
