Customising gel phone cases

I am a very recent convert to gel cases for phones. I bought a Redmi Note 9 Pro whose colour description was Grey, but it looks more like a horrible very shiny blue colour to me :( However it came with what turns out to be a very nice grey tinted gel case that totally changes the look of the device, and makes it less slippery to hold as well. Since gel cases are dirt cheap on eBay I've bought them for all my other phones, although the one for the Galaxy Tab A 8 had to come from China as I could't find a local supplier. The drawback with most gel cases is that they are transparent giving a look that I don't like very much.

After a bit of research I got my partner to dig around in her craft stores and she came up with a pot of water-based artists' acrylic paint she had been given but had no use for, in this case a metallic black. After cleaning the inside of the cases with meths (denatured alcohol for non-Brits). I gave each about three coats of paint. It won't cover immediately so needs several coats, and don't overbrush or you tend to dissolve the previous coat which you don't want. The paint dries ready for another coat after about an hour or less, but you then need to leave it a week or more before fitting it to the phone. In this time the acrylic polymer cross links to form a reasonably tough film. Once fitted to the phone they no longer look like a gel case and look part of the phone, given all my phones are black anyway.

The gel cases protect the corners of the phone with some cushioning that might save the screen if dropped. The ones for phones with a camera bump often have a raised ridge round it so that when laid on its back the face of the camera is no longer in contact with the surface. Similarly they are often slightly raised around the screen edge so when placed face down the screen does not contact the surface it is on. This is good, as I don't like using screen protectors.

For the outlay of a few quid I'm very pleased with the outcome.

I agree with you Andrew, I've tried a few protective cases over the years, but they all add bulk to the phone. A gel case only adds a few mm to it's size and makes it easier to hold - less likely to slip.
