I read about these news but I don't know what the camera has to do with Google maps.
My guess is image recognition and comparison against Google street view images.

i guess they used a camera with depth sensor or just 2 cameras together to get 3d information.

Maybe but how did they link the camera to the location.

the location you have from gps, the rotation from compass + other device sensors
