How apps like chat works

Hi all.

I have a general question concerning chat like apps.
I am wondering how i can retrieve a peers (ip)address.
How does that work with Whatsapp?

Do you always need a 'server in the middle' which stores (ip) addresses based on a username or is there an other way to do this?

Does android market supply this kind of service (a server which we can use to store the ip addresses)?

Yes, you do need that server in between.

Probably better to use something like pubnub in a webview or something like that.

Ok but is Pubnub abble to retrieve the ip addresses of the devices i want to send messages Because is a device was shutdown and startup again it can get an other ip address then it had before.
