Android Question How do automation apps, such as Tasker, work?

As the title says,
How do automation tools/app, such as Tasker, work? How have the developers programmed such tools?
I guess they must be listening to intents, maybe the apps are using Settings.Secure, perhaps using the Accessibility Services????
Any ideas?

Anyway, they are impressive apps/tools.
