Sorry for hijacking this thread but Steve you seem to know a lot about building audio-applications.

I am playing both the guitar and the piano (at least that's what I think) and I have always been interested in audio-apps. Of course, on my PC I have Cubase and various VST-instruments for recording. I also have some software-amps such as Amplitude for my guitar.

I noted that for iPad and even iPhone there are apps (which together with some cables) which permits you to play the guitar using the iphone (amplitube is one example). However, if you look at their web-site, there is no software for Android which permits you to do the same.

Do you know the reason why such companies are not producing similar software for Android? One reason could be that Apple = Music business but I suspect that there is also hardware related issues. I think it might be because Android would have problems with lags perhaps due to the fact that JAVA is in the middle and the app would not be able to talk natively with the hardware and hence the lag. Probably on the iPhone/iPad the apps are talking natively with the various drivers.

Any ideas? Do you think eventually Android will get some good apps for playing the guitar/music?

It's certainly something that is on my list to look at, although I'm not a java expert so there will be a big learning curve in getting the audio in to the device.

I think the main problem is the diversity of hardware, while most phones will have an external mic input, tablets may not. They will probably have a built in mic, but not a way of getting the audio directly in. And it's tablets where most audio apps would become usable, not least due to the speed of the newer devices and the screen sizes.

The USB host supported in Android 3+ will help, but will require additional hardware.

There are sequencers and audio processing software written in Java, so I am hopeful that speed won't be too much of an issue with the right hardware.

For large companies I think it will boil down to the uncertain size of the potential market.

of course, we need that Android-devices get hardware-interfaces (such as the more recent tablets with USB) in order to be able to hook up a guitar for instance. What regards "raw" processing-power, I think most recent devices already have what needed - I mean with iPhone4 and upwards you can play the guitar decently.

I am more worried about latency and that's why I am wondering if JAVA (being a wrapper) will delay the audio-signal too much.

Anyway, hopefully one day Android will get some nice amps and similar audio-software.
