Seeding a random # generator

In the post http://www.b4x.com/forum/bugs-wishlist/9778-seed-rnd.html I wished for a way to seed Rnd so that a series of random numbers could be repeated by entering the same seed number. Erel recommended the Encryption library. Below is the code (except that Dim DealNum is in Sub Globals).

The Encryption library generates a list of random numbers into the array data(52), which is what I need to sort a deck of 52 cards. It will generate a different series each time unless the same DealNumber is entered.

The numbers generated may be negative and they may be greater than 52, so the line marked * makes each a positive number from 0 to 51. I don't think that a "0" is ever returned (not in a couple of dozen tries, anyway), meaning there will be no "0 Mod 51 = 51", so card 51 could never get swapped more than once (when i=51), if I'm not mistaken, so I'm using "i Mod 52" such that when i = 51, i Mod 52 = 51 and when i = 52, i Mod 52 = 0, which I think covers both ends of the deck.

Since this kind of algorithm is not my strong suit, I would appreciate it if anyone can point out any problems with this code. (Here's a discussion of the sort algorithm, if interested.) I've tried out the code and it appears to work, but if there is a flaw in the code, it might be hard to spot by just looking at the deals.

Your code looks correct. As I understand it, data(i) can be 0.
You can try running a loop waiting for 0 to check if it sometimes happens.

Note that the distribution will not be perfect. However I think that it will be fine for your game.

You're right. I was mistaken when I said that 0 Mod 51 = 51. It is 0. But as it happens, using Mod 52 does give me the numbers 0-51, so the routine was right in spite of me.

When I used the sort routine posted above in my program, in a couple of dozen deals, the majority had hands with 7- to 8-card suits in them, which is a pretty significant error.

So I tried the code below to count the 52 numbers provided by the Encryption library, as modified to get the numbers to fall between 0 and 51, for 1000 deals.

The result is kind of odd. Zero is always around 1000-1025; 1-23 are always around 1200-1250; 25 is always around 1000; then 25-51 are around 800. I've run this a dozen times and it always comes out exactly in this pattern. Using Rnd at the same time, all the numbers are fairly close to 1000, as they should be.

I'll keep testing the game with the Encryption random numbers, but it's not looking good so far. Any chance of working up a Seed function for Rnd?

Here's something odd. I've programmed my app using an Archos 70 tablet. I just put it (APK) onto an HTC EVO Android phone. When I ran it on the EVO, the deal (cards) using the routine above was different on the EVO than on the Archos when using the same seed number.

When did you expect the next B4A update to be released? I'm kind of on hold now as the Encryption generator seems unreliable.
