Space on sdcard

I've seen that it's recommended that you write files to DirDefaultExternal rather than /sdcard. Is there any way of finding out the free space left on /sdcard (i.e. so that there is sufficient to write a file of known size? I presume that this would be a property of File.DirRoot External.
