Thought my new SSD was broken...

Bought a new SSD today and wondered why I could not initialize it (via USB). Problem was the power supply. I first connected it via SATA2USB adapter which was delivered with another (smaller) Samsung SSD. Using a SATA2USB with an extra power supply solved that little issue.

USB delivers 3.3V in most cases. Mothorboards give 5 & 12V. so that missing 1.7V seemed to be enough to not let it operate right.

Out of curiosity which SSD was this?
So you have a SATA SSD, that you wanted to plugin to your PCs USB ports?
So you are saying the SATA2USB Adapters didnt work?
Also sometimes its worth changing the ports, some ports have limited current draw. I think only some of my ports deliver 2 or 1.6A the others deliver only 500mA.
