Timer & Modal Dialog question

I need to have a timer running on the 'main screen' (kind of like a stopwatch), but I need the timer to keep running and displaying even when bringing up a modal dialog. But the Timer docs indicate that timer events stop firing when a modal dialog is up. Any way around this?

The way around this is not to use a modal dialog.
A modal dialog will block timer messages.
Use a panel or a non-modal dialog instead.
