United/Union

As we all know there's the European Union (some european states living next to each other without borders as good neighbours). Some guy from the UNITED States told one other guy from the EU to leave the union because he doesn't like unions at all.

Just a non political thought: Why doesn't the first guys tell all States of the USA to leave the United States? Wouldn't that be fair?

Perhaps I don't understand the words "united" and "union"
