Workmen vs Craftsmen

Short(ish) story about recent events. (Nothing to do with computers / coding so feel free to skip reading it)

Our heating has been upgraded(?) to use ground water heating from the old gas boiler heating system.

The first part of the conversion was to install pipes to our property (hot water & return plus new cold water) and fit the heat exchange unit in the kitchen. This part was carried out by 'workmen'. It took three of them 1 entire day to mount the unit on the wall and run a few new pipes inside the property. The outside pipes took far longer maybe 3 months to eventually terminate outside the property.

Last week we had the second fix (replacing the radiators and inside pipes) this was done by 'craftsmen', one on the first day and two on the following two days.

Day 1 - one man working on his own manages to redo the heat transfer unit fixing (it was at an angle - but the 'workmen' assured us it was an optical illusion due to the tiles/ceiling/walls).
he then replaced all the pipes running to and from it and replaced the spaghetti piping running to the outside pipes.

Day 2 - Drained the system. Replaced all the feed pipes to bathroom/toilet/kitchen. Removed hot water tank. Replaced the feed pipes (the 'workmen' had put up with straight run pipes). Removed the radiators from all rooms. (No heating that night, luckily flat is warm and we had mild weather).

Day3 - Fit all radiators to new pipes. Prime the system (apparently our radiators now contain de-ionized water). Check for leaks (none found). Tidy up and leave. (After getting 'workmen' to fix the leak in the cold-water supply pipes outside the property).

Now I must say I was impressed at their work - they moved the furniture out and back because I couldn't. They were polite, answered any questions I had. So impressed I decided to give them some cash for their good work in a thank you card.
They opened the card saw the cash then argued it was too much and gave me 60% of it back.

Workmen vs Craftsmen - pretty dramatic difference in attitude and work.

So now running on the eco-friendly planet saving heating it's slightly cooler but not by much.

Skilled labour isn't cheap.
