App update without prompts

Our app is not in the market, it's on our own servers. I can detect when the app has been updated.

Question: How can I download the app and install it without user prompts?

This is required as our app is a dedicated media player without any user interaction.

On Windows I can simply replace the .exe. I assume that won't work with an Android .apk?

I've searched the forum but haven't found the answer. If this has been answered before I'd appreciate a link to the thread.

It is impossible to silently install an APK on Android. The only exception is with ADB connected (USB debug mode).

Hi Erel,

When I downloads apps from the Google play store you can select the auto update option. So the first time you install it it asks for permission but thereafter it updates silently.

Would it work if we did that, i.e. host it on the play store and on initial download select the auto update option?
