arduino vs raspberry pi zero

Getting ready to start a project.
Basically a temperature censer to turn on and off a 12v fan?

arduino?
raspberry pi zero?

Does it matter?

they have these mini arduinos these days which could be easier built into that fan.

Yes. They are very different.
Raspberry Pi is a small computer.
Arduino / ESP8266 are microcontrollers. No OS. No configuration. Connect the power and your program will start running.

I would go with Arduino or ESP8266 (if you want it to connect it to the network).

ESP can be used as add-on to add WiFi to the arduino, or as standalone board.
There are already all the tools you need here in the forum!

I ordered the kit (Arduino Uno) for learning and prototyping and the WeMos D1 that I am thinking will be the end product.
