Android Question Auto Update app

I have been thinking of ways to eliminate the user acceptance to app updates (not downloaded from Google Play).
Since the APK is merely a "zip" file and the zip file is stored within the android device, is it possible for an app to download the new APK and merely unzip it to the installed location, then app restarts itself, thus upgrading the app without having to bother the user with install/done/open stuff?

It is not possible. The only way to update an APK is with the built-in installer.

I think though if the device is rooted you can do it.

If you think about it you are really talking about a Trojan or Root Kit (?) or Virus - An app that downloads an update and then installs without asking the user for approval.
