I've suggested this before, so I found a master programmer who had 20 years of BASIC programmming expericence and has written books on the subject. The below book I read and is top notch (I have read several books on VB and this is a easy one to learn from). Here's a suggestion to contact about getting a professional book made about b4a. Only Erel can do this. I did send him an email about this, but really this has to go through Erel. I cant even figure out how to get a database going to finsih a program i wrote.

I second the making of a book.
I love to have books on the languages I program in.

So if there is any chance for a book on B4A then by all means please do so!!

B4A Book(s)

While I would be much in favor of a book, we do have a Users Guide and a Beginners Guide as well as a Help Viewer. I would be more in favor of these 3 being integrated to 1 as there is duplication between them on some elements and they all contain enough info at various stages of learning that they all need to be reviewed (as well as the forum which is more specific to posted issues). The drawback is that B4A is evolving quite dramatically and documenting the growth in a book each time...
Just some thoughts.

book for B4a

I agree completely with the idea of having a book created specially for b4a. I know there are other resources and those are great, however nothing can compare to that of having a physical copy infront of you. I find that well written books are much easier to learn from than a pdf document. Also I would be willing to pay for a book, as it would be a reference I could always go back to.

wheretheidivides .. for years I utilized random access files for data storage because of numerous failed attempts at learning SQL /SQllite Access ect. due to over the top complex tutorials. Since purchasing B4a September last year ,with the help of Forum members with a few questions, some reading and a very helpful website,w3Schools / SQL Tutorial I now have SQLite database (8 Tables) up and running, and to be honest still scratching my head how simple it has been. (what did I miss over all those years ???)

Yes , I might be only touching on the basics , inserting records, deleting, Updating, sorting ,searching and retrieving but at this stage thats all I need. Probably the best thing I did was start a small app for that sole purpose, Create a new database and populate it with three 3 columns off data , then experimented with deleting , retrieving
ect . As it got more complex and I was more confident with it ,It was then applied to my working app.
Without knowing the complexity of your database needs (which might be over my head) you are welcome to pm me and well take one step at a time.

Cheers mj

mango, thanks for the offer. I have learned how to use margets db. I don't understand it all, but have 90% of it. It's actually fairly easy. There were things I did not know about like pointers and when you do searches you have to save and recall variables. I figurered it out.

I am familiar with the SAMs series books and would buy one on b4a in a heartbeat. I think getting such a book into bookstores would be a great help towards putting b4a into the category of a "mainstream" programming platform for Android.

thx,
Ray

@whertheidivides ..
I initially used Margarets db (thanks Margaret)and also played with dbUtils .. but really wanted to use SQL directly and found it much simpler to grasp /understand ?.
Just reading the above link for an older posting by yourself, you brought up the subject , a database Designer /Editor for B4a. Although a 3Rd party utility you are aware of SQLite DB Browser ? , SQLite Database Browser
I used this initially to create new db's for injection into my apps. Also very useful to view data to see results of queries/statements ect during learning /debugging.

Cheers mj

B4A Book - Basic4Android Buch drucken lassen

I think we should do it this way:

The B4A-WIKI to collect all the text ....
Then everybody can print ....

I would give it ready to print ...
In all languages...
Publish your own book - Book publishing: BoD - Books on Demand GmbH
Because it could be any sale ....
Costs incurred for the buyer ....

Fast, inexpensive, efficient....

@ Vader: You have, in my view, been pushed most.
What do you say?
I am sure that you coordinate this.

Wiki > Wikibook > Book
I've done it 6 times ...

One of the things I find is that I browse this forum and read a posting in the forum and days later I would like to go back to it, but it really needs a better indexing directory of topics and keywords. As good as the search tool is I need to read through each posting to find what I had previously read.

In addition, I would appreciate (and buy) an advanced level CD or online set of substantial well documented demos, of classes, SOAP, Sockets and well, pretty much all the libraries. With a live SQL database and logins to support multi-user non-trivial data.

Better than a book or book plus CD:
Have the libraries with well made fully working demos available on Google Play with names like
b4a_Compass_Maps_Celltower
b4a_Shared_Data_Manufacturing
b4a_Scientific_Astro_Lab
b4a_Photo_Laboratory

Each demo would bear the b4a logo of approval.

The showcase would also be a great marketing tool for b4a. Our forum contributors could submit their products for approval and receive some kind of shared payment in the next stage which would be a PayPal subscription to the modules and code. This way, the contributors would be responsible for documentation of the code and or libraries in a more powerful searchable directory structure.

The PayPal (yearly ?) subscription would access such a directory. Obviously this is a grand plan but with the number of users today and presumably the growth of android, a better revenue could be generated than the $1 per download that most Google Play gets.

Why do you need the book? I think that Klaus' guides is the best manual. I 'm not good at English, but I'm understand what Klaus wrote. I think that B4A book is best ,it must from the expert B4A developer.

Today I Begin reading in the digital version of The Basic4Android by Penny Press Sales

Basic4Android: Rapid App Development for Android [Kindle Edition] It is really nice and fun to read.
I do a lot programming in appinventor and I think this is a good step forward! In the digital version you can easy open links and navigate.
I thnk this is a good step for beginners! Also the suppport from Wyken Seagrave is good!

Following a request from readers, I have now produced a new version of the ebook which includes an index. I have also taken this opportunity to fix a small mistake in the original, which missed the # off #Region and #End Region in samples of code.
The 3 versions of the ebook (pdf, ebook and mobi for Kindle) are available from the same place: buy.basic4android.info, which are still available at 25% discount until Friday 15 November. Purchase of the ebook still entitles the purchaser to 25% discount off the printed version.

Hi Theera,

I also think that Klaus's two books are wonderful and very useful. And best of all they are free! However they do not provide a complete source of reference for Basic4android, so the developer must repeatedly search through the website to find many of the missing details.

On the other hand the book by Wyken Seagrave, as well as providing an introduction to the IDE and a primer for how to design, debug and sell an app, brings together a wide range of information including complete references to the language, core objects, standard libraries and other features which makes it a valuable single point of reference for all developers, both beginners and experts.
