In this context I suspect it means it doesn't know what to apply the "*" meta-character to, a reference similar to "A dangling modifier" in sentence structure.
And yes, I agree it could be phrased a bit more clearly.
Just for "information" (otherwise I wouldn't have written in "Chit Chat"), I wanted to use a "custom" separator to compose a string which would then be splitted into parts using Regex.Split.
I had "*** sep ***" set as separator (if I remember correctly, because now I no longer use special characters like "*").
