Android Question FTP Question

I have read Erel's tutorial in FTP and can understand why it takes place in the background. However, my application needs to download the latest xml file before it opens so that the users have the latest information.

Is there a way of starting an application in a hidden way, completing the FTP and then displaying the app?

Maybe by displaying something other than the main app? Like a screensaver etc.?

What about displaying a start screen in your app with settings, informations for the user or something like that while getting the xml in the background?
If i would like to start an app and nothing happens, i'm not sure about using the app a second time.
