Android Question Google Licensing - Still Relevent?

I have a reference app dating from the very early days of B4A that is still a very good seller. It has Google Licensing incorporated and that appears to have kept it safe from copyright abuse.

Recently I am getting complaints that 'Not Licensed' is being returned on an increasing number of occasions that presents an inconvenience to the user. The users report that they are in solid internet coverage so I must assume that the issue lies in Google servers returning incorrect responses occasionally. In short - I am getting to the point where I would like to ditch GL.

Is the encryption protection currently afforded by the Play Store of a standard where I can have confidence in a similar level of copyright protection? Should I go for App Signing as a better level of protection?

Google App signing has nothing to do with your app security.

Starting from Android 4.1 all paid Google Play apps are encrypted and it is theoretically not possible to move the app from one device to another.
It might make sense to limit your app to Android 4.1+ and remove the licensing protection (which is also not 100% safe).
