How does Google know if your ad is showing?

Alright, I know (guess) no one here works for Google, but I'd still like to hear your opinion.

Regarding AdMob, when you place a panel on top of your ad, this way concealing it, does Google know that your ad isn't being displayed? That your ad is under the panel? Are you still getting paid?

@wonder

what is the point if they might only pay on clicks?

or do you want to hide it for a paid version of an app? then you better disable the calls to it.

Admob pays per click and not per add show.

I'm asking because I have a kind of "slider" on my ad.
The ad slides on screen (ad.Top from -10%y to 0%y) during the game menu and goes back off screen (ad.Top from 0%y to -10%y) during gameplay.
I used a black panel before to create a fade-out effect (for colors.alpha = 0 to 255) for my ad during gameplay.

Paulo, to my understanding, AdMob pays per click and also per 1000 impressions (views).
