I am trying to find the most efficient way parsing this Data above.

In this data, I need to populate a listbox control with Header bytes.

The Header bytes are 18DAF110 AND Further down 18DAF118.

XX will always be there YY ZZ might or might not exist. 4100 will always be after XX YY ZZ.

Here is what I have but not satisfy because of the decoy value 4100 after "18DAF110XXYYZZ41004758685" and my coding accepts only XX.

Klaus, Thanks for your effort. I have not plugged in this code to try it. I should of explained in more details, but it appears this coding might only work for 1 of the protocols, well not sure if it will.

the DataReceived above is Protocol 7 or 9. I am expecting 8 characters or 4 Header Bytes. 18 DA F1 10 and 18 DA F1 18 want to add to the listbox. Misprint on the ExpectNumLen = 10 (should be ExpectNumLen = 8). Headers Value can vary



Protocol 6 or 8 = expecting 3 characters. Misprint ExpectNumLen = 5 (should be ExpectNumLen = 3)
Example Protocol 6 or 8 DataReceived = "7E8XXYYZZ410056473849" vbnewline "7E9XXYYZZ410083847383"
7E8 and 7E9 are the Headers need to be added. (Headers can vary 7Ex)


protocol 1-5 = expecting 6 characters (3 bytes)
DataReceived = "41F110410084843747" vbnewline "4848F118410084859684"
41 F1 10 and 48 F1 18 are the Headers need to be added. Always First 6 Header bytes before 4100 and Header bytes value can vary.

My Device actually splits those data into frames with a newline feed in between. I should of been more specific earlier.
All of these Protocols have 4100 bytes in common and always after header bytes. But some of the protocols(6-9) always have XX and may have YY ZZ in front of the Headers and they always before 4100. Anything after 4100 that have a value 4100 should be avoided. Like the Decoy I have added. The beginning bytes always starts off with Headers and depending on protocol the length bytes are different.

Shouldn't you treat those as bytes ?
Shouldn't you treat each line and find the first occurence of "4100" ?
Are "4100" two bytes or 4 characters ?

The Bluetooth Adapter is called Elm327. It is an OBD 2 to RS232 interpreter. The device transmit Data to PC in strings. In windows App I use Readchar and update the textbox with the string value.

ELM device will send it as string character 4100. The 2 String characters represents a Byte. Which is 0x41 and 0x00.

I have only limited experience with Parsing strings, but would it be possible to receive the whole data set and then use a regular expression (http://www.b4x.com/forum/basic4andr...orials/7123-regular-expressions-tutorial.html) to parse out the stuff you require?
I've used RegEx once before with B4PPC and it was extremely fast compared with using standard string manipulation techniques.
Unfortunately I'm not able to help much more than to point you in the direction of RegEx as I've only found this post whilst search for help on a program I'm currently trying to get going and I've very limited experience with regular expressions. They can be quite tricky to get working as you want, but once you've got the expression right it is very, very fast.

Hey, I m sorry to post in this thread but I am doing so since I have no clue on how to start a new thread.Anyway my question is related to this , so I am posting here.
I am actually trying to develop an application to communicate with elm 327.I have to display the speed and the RPM on the android device.
1.I want to know about the bluetooth connection to ELM327.Is it like anyother bluetooth connection?
2.Secondly to get the data I know that we have to send this AT messages. But I need an idea on how to do it?
3. Another thing is if I get the data then how would android be able to read it. Does it have to converted into another format?

Please help me with this ,since you have worked with an application, I am sure you would be able to answer this.Thank you!!!
