iOS Question Possible to skip the app store?

If I have a cross-platform app that I only want to share with certain people, is it possible to provide an installation file to download from a web site or send as an email attachment that can then be installed on iOS?

I really don't want to sign up as an Apple developer just to help out a small group of friends.

You have to have an Apple Developer account whether you distribute your Ap ad-hoc or via the App Store.
