Setting file associations

I would like to set a new file association for my program but I couldn't find instructions on how to do it, only programs that do the job.

It would use a unique file type (renamed text file) that would have its own icon. Then how is it interpreted by the application?

What's with the application side handling? How can I know what file was launched?

The file is passed as the first argument:

Sub App_Start
 If ArrayLen(args()) > 0 then
  LaunchedFile = args(0)
  ...
 End If
