is it possible to wake the phone by shaking it while app is in background?

Your app cannot monitor the sensors when it is in the background.

i saw once an app in the news where the guy clap on the iphone and his mac turn on (i cannot remember the app name) but its interesting how he did it if there is no possibility to tigger an shake event while app is in background...
