Android Question Standard contacts app: How to show own app like WhatsApp is shown?

When I open a contact in my phone's standard app, WhatsApp is shown with some available options (phone call, video call, etc.). How is that done? By registering intents like when we want to register an own app for content to be shared with?

There are two options:

1. Whatsapp is handling the DIAL intent filter (or maybe a different filter): https://www.b4x.com/android/forum/threads/can-we-intercept-tel-urls.21709/#post-126963
2. Whatsapp option was explicitly added to the app.
