Haplo New Member Licensed User Longtime User Feb 23, 2014 #1 If i purchase a VPS :- http://www.weloveservers.net/ Operating System: Centos 6 32 bit. (various you can choose). How difficult will it be to set up remote database, and get RDC running on it. ? Java? noob here, so no clue I've read a lot of the site, and there doesn't appear to be guides on how to set up remote databases, for use with B4A. (for noobs !) Basically, all i want to do, is get a remote server running, so that i can play around with a database design.

warwound Expert Licensed User Longtime User Feb 24, 2014 #4 I've helped a couple of forum members set up RDC on VPSs from WeLoveSevers. Each time i used 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 as the operating system as i only have skills with Ubuntu. It's pretty straightforward to do. If you can use Ubuntu as the operating system then i'm happy to help you get it all working. The great thing about these VPSs is you can quickly and easily set up so many things. As well as installing java and the b4a RDC server you can: Install Apache, PHP and MySQL and have a fully featured webserver. You can install PostgreSQL and now you can use MySQL or PostgreSQL databases. Install an FTP server too - always handy to be able to access your VPS using FTP. Martin. Upvote 0

Haplo New Member Licensed User Longtime User Feb 24, 2014 #5 Many thanks for the info. I will read up some more, and go with what you recommend Martin. Thanks for the offer. Once i've got a test database up and running, i, hopefully, will learn more. Upvote 0

warwound Expert Licensed User Longtime User Feb 25, 2014 #6 Here's a few links you might find useful. Set the server timezone - the default is unlikely to be what you want. http://blog.bobbyallen.me/2013/06/27/setting-the-correct-timezone-on-a-ubuntu-12-04-server/ Create the 'locale' settings you require - the default may not be what you require or you might even find that no default locale exists. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ubuntu+server+create+locale&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 Create your user account - don't use the 'root' superuser for anything but administrative tasks. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/add-a-user-on-ubuntu-server/ Install OpenJDK, you can install the runtime (jre) or the compiler (jdk) and you can install version 6 or version 7 of each of these. I'd recommend you install version 7 of the jre or jdk, the jre is all you need unless you plan to compile java on the server. Code: Copy sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ubuntu+server+openjdk+install&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 Install Apache, PHP and MySQL. https://www.digitalocean.com/commun...l-linux-apache-mysql-php-lamp-stack-on-ubuntu Install phpMyAdmin. https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-and-secure-phpmyadmin-on-ubuntu-12-04 Install an FTP server. https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-set-up-vsftpd-on-ubuntu-12-04 All these tasks must be done using an SSH client. If you use Windows then i'd recommend MobaXterm as an SSH client. 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 is i think the best choice of operating system, it's widely used and if/when you need help you'll find Google has plenty of help available for 12.04. The purpose of having the VSP is to install B4J server applications. Does anyone have a tutorial how to set up a VPS for B4J (mysql, java,...)? Thanks in advance, John Upvote 0
