Questions:

What are your opinions/experiences with VirusTotal?
  • How do you deal with "malicious" flags?
  • If this happens a lot, is there any way we can put pressure on the vendors (as a community) to be a little less quick to flag B4J apps?
  • What do you think about setting up an old PC to see if I can get more details from each vendor that set off a flag in VirusTotal. I will use trial copies of their software. My hope is to get more details on what the vendor tool is flagging so I can better report the issue to them.

Background:

I had a customer notify me that Malwarebytes flagged my executable when he started it. I saw in another post here that we a known issue with Malwarebytes (https://www.b4x.com/android/forum/threads/virus-into-app-packaged-from-the-ide.120271/#post-751970) so I submitted my .exe to their false positive forum and they removed the warning. However, it got me to thinking, what is the best way to see if any other virus/malware detectors were flagging my B4J applications? A little bit of research turned up the VirusTotal tool (https://www.virustotal.com/).

I submitted all of my B4J apps and deployments to VirusTotal and the results are a bit disappointing. It seems my Mac and Linux deployments do not trigger any flags. However, my Windows executable and setup program (generated by B4J) both set off flags in VirusTotal. Of course, I am working with the vendors knowing these are false positives but so far they have been slow to get back to me.

Here are the actual results from my last check:

NMCollectorCP.exe (SecureAge APEX, Elastic)

SetupNMCollectorCP.exe (Microsoft)
