Android Question APK distribution without appstore

We are running a proprietary system that we don't want to share with the wide world. Is there a way to do software distribution without the app store?
Maybe we can host out own app store?

I have your same needs, so I implemented this - 5 years ago.
Apps automatically update upon version number change - however it still requires the user to accept (install) update...

Nope... It is an Android thing... User is required in the process... (otherwise, think of havoc one could potentially reek).
